Swati + Shreyas: A vibrant and joyful wedding part 1 - the Henna party (San Jose, CA)
In the Indian tradition, a henna party is given to the bride before the wedding, where they have artists to paint intricate patterns on the hands and feet of the bridal party, and the bride gets the most intricate patterns to set her apart. These patterns symbolizes blessings, luck and joy.
Swati's Henna Party was held at her parents house on the day before her wedding. When I got to their residence, Swati was already sitting still for a while for her hands to be painted. As one could imagine, to draw such delicate and complex patterns, it would take hours to do, and also for the paint to dry. So during this time while Swati had to sit still, her family and friends entertained her with games, dance and a Bollywood skit that replayed how Swati and Shreyas met. It was indeed a joyful time, and made the bride and everyone else very happy. And at times, the bride could not resist the temptation and started to dance along!
